On the divorce of the Batavian King

AN INSTRUCTION BY THE PALACE OF THE DIVINE LIGHT OF HEAVENS
ON THE DIVORCE OF THE BATAVIAN KING

We, loyal servants of the Chidao Emperor, sole and absolute ruler over the Jingdaoese Empire, Light of Heavens, send greetings to our fellow wanderers on the path of purity.

The Imperial Palace has received multiple messages about the statement made by Clara Waffel-Paine, also called Clara Sundara that she has been divorced from her husband, King Arkadius of the Batavians. In this instruction, we will try to answer some questions brought forward by fellow servants of His Divine Majesty, the greatest Heavenly Light.

A common question to be asked is whether divorce is allowed. To answer this question we also need to ask why marriage is allowed. Marriage is not a frivolous occasion, a party, to celebrate that two individuals have feelings of lust for each other. Marriage is the bond between a man and a woman to create offspring together and take good care of the offspring. Divorce is allowed on one ground. This being when one of the two is infertile before any offspring is produced, if both are infertile then there is no reason for divorce, when offspring has already been created, raising the child remains a task for both parents. When one of the parents does not take good care of the offspring, this is not a ground for divorce. The first step would be to try to persuade the neglectful parent to step up through marital counselling, if that were to be ineffective the state would intervene. It is clear that Clara Waffel-Paine cannot claim the right to divorce from Arkadius, as he has given her three children already.

Another common question is what the punishment is for unlawful divorce. This question cannot be answered as there is no such thing as unlawful divorce. The marriage remains intact when the divorce has not been recognised by a court. This means that all the obligations surrounding marriage also remain intact, and that when both partners have agreed to monogamy, as is customary in marriages where both partners are heterosexual, any lustful encounters with new partners would constitute a crime. This also means that King Arkadius cannot engage in a new relationship, and that any child that would be born from a new relationship would be a bastard.
