The Displeasure of Heaven and Earth

Post by Saohuang »

My brother and sister Princes:

I was under the impression that those of us in this chamber were undead, not merely dead. Was I mistaken?

Truly this union of states is in dire straits, if this is what we have come to. In the name of the Emperor, I sent out my own daughter into the wastes of Nordmark to reclaim them for civilization, to no acclaim or indeed response. An amendment to the Charter has awaited all other votes but mine for decades, but has languished. You have not even bestirred yourselves to vote for a new Emperor, though two choices were set before you!

Shame! Dishonor! Are we to face the nations in such a state? Are we to remain impotent and ineffective, till we dwindle into nothing? Have you no pride? Have you no sense of duty?

My Lords, this state of affairs shall not stand. I hereby put this Council on notice that it has 10 years ASC: it must elect a new Emperor, it must either complete its vote on the amended Charter or propose a different amendment, and it must at least begin deliberations on reform of the Empire, for it is clear that the current situation is intolerable. And, my Lords, should the Council not rise to the occasion, know that Tieya shall depart this Union and leave it to its own devices. My nation has its share of problems, and I have no small part in its sad state; but I would rather see it waste away under its own management than because of another's.

May Heaven and Earth forgive you.

I echo the sentiments expressed by the Queen of Tieya, but also wish to express my disapproval with the overly Cibolocentric attitude of this Council. The empire is not confined to the Cibolan continent and fresh leadership from beyond those shores is urgently required.

If a non-Cibolan is not elected to the Imperial throne and meaningful reform undertaken to correct this imbalance of power, Karalakh shall join Tieya in leaving.

Members of the Council,

I have been in consultation with my mother, our newly-elected empress, and wish to report the fruits of our discussion. My mother is of the opinion (and I would tend to agree with her) that the challenges facing our community run deeper even than our colleague of Tieya was perhaps willing to admit.

I believe in the value of a supranational union linking our otherwise small and inconsequential realms; we share a common history and it makes sense for us to continue to work together for a common future. Unfortunately, recent years have seen the shadow of ennui- ever a threat to those like us- fall over this happy dream.

We have to accept that our world is changing. Old powers are declining and new ones are taking their place; now more than ever we need to set aside our vanity and our differences and co-operate more closely. In short, I believe that a closer political union is not only desirable, but necessary.

I say to you, my brother-and-sister necrarchs, that the time has come to rethink the very nature of this union and not just the details of its functioning. While the collegiate nature of our decision making is, I believe, worth preserving, I nevertheless feel that it would benefit from a more structured context. The system of imperial elections was a noble and well-meaning experiment, but I doubt that any here would truly call it a success. Perhaps then it would be desirable to retain this Council, albeit under the presidency of an unelected emperor or empress?

What I am about to propose may shock some of you; even if it does not, it will certainly require some adjustment. I believe that the best hope for our realms lies in joining together with my mother's kingdom, beneath a common imperial banner.

Dear Colleagues,

I completely agree that something must be done to restore the fortunes of our empire!

I am intrigued by the suggestions of my dear granddaughter and would like to hear more of her ideas. It is sadly true that our electoral system has not been the success we once hoped; it is also true that we need to work together for the betterment of our people. Maybe a closer union is the answer? My dear daughter has certainly enjoyed success with her new realm and perhaps we Cibolans do need a little Benacian inspiration!

Perhaps not quite the sort of reform I was expecting... but I trust that representation on the Council of Necrarchs would ensure that the influence of the Realms would not be overly diminished. And, after all, it would reduce the amount of time spent negotiating with Third State Arbor officials when I wish to visit my honored father.

I believe I could bring myself to support this proposal.

I agree with the Queen of Tieya- these proposals go a lot further than I was expecting. However, perhaps this is a good thing? It would not be the first time we have reinvented our corner of Micras and it is surely true that things have been allowed to stagnate for too long.

Provided the Nidarosian Church's special place in Riskai is respected- and provided the other members of this Council support this change- then I shall go along with it.

Dear Colleagues,

My beloved wife have always wanted the best, for our family and for the people of the empire. We are both acutely conscious of the sacrifices made by our children and grandchildren, who made way for us upon our re-corporation; this is our opportunity to make amends by placing the best-interests of the wider community first.

I believe that this agreement has the potential to usher in a new era for our realms and revitalise this empire. To that end, dear colleagues, I declare myself in favour of this proposal and encourage you to do the same:
