2017 World Cup broadcasts and match reports

Senya wrote:Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Senya for the eleventh FMF World Cup! This summer's tournament will see twenty of Micras' top international sides battle it out to earn the right to be World Champions come August 13th. The final will be played in the iconic Snakepit stadium, with a capacity of 115,000, aided mainly by vast safe-standing sections, this tournament should be one to stick in the memory for a long time! Just remember to grab your ticket, pick up a few flares on the way to the stadium, and prepare to jump, sing, cheer, cry and experience every emotion as the World Cup kicks off on July 7th!

Senya
Road to Senya: Qualified automatically as hosts after being the only nation to bid for the tournament.

Star Man: Barnaby Hands. The young captain has had a successful past 12 months for club and country, winning the Copa Apollonia, Senyan Top League, Kopa Sanya, AEFA Champions’ League and FMF Champions’ League, all as captain. Will be hoping to cap a magnificent season with the World Cup trophy come August 13th.

One to Watch: Sileman Bɏankarlënœ. Often overlooked as a goalkeeper in a free-scoring and attacking team, has proved for both club and country that he is a top goalkeeper that can be relied upon.

Reasons to be excited: Backed on by their infamous fans, Senya are notoriously hard to beat at home and are in the form of their life, having registered just one defeat since November 2015. Have been free-scoring in friendlies against some of Micras’ top teams, recently putting five past CiboTap champions Birgeshir.

Reasons to worry: Senya aren’t tournament specialists and could see the weight of expectation drag them down. They threw away a 2-0 lead against Hamland in the knock-outs of the last World Cup and lost 1-0 to Gotzborg at the Copa Apollonia. It’s not beyond them to mess this up.

Prediction: Many people’s favourites to win on home soil, coupled with their crazy fans and on a rich run of form, it will take something special to stop them from lifting the trophy at the end of the tournament.
Lakkvia
Road to Senya: Breezed through AEFA Group B, with a 2-2 draw in Dura the only hiccup on an otherwise straight-forward run to the finals.

Star Man: Freddie Vorgensen. Another great season for Urzi Magalatska in the Senyan Top League, the midfielder is very much the heart of everything good Lakkvia do.

One to Watch: Frankäya Kischt. Thrown into the deep-end being named Lakkvia's number seven following several solid seasons with Frostborg Hurmu in the Esimeneliiga, and may be open to showcasing his talents to attract a move abroad.

Reasons to be excited: A team with a mixture of youth and experience, the senior players having played in many tournaments over the years for both Hurmu and Lakkvia, they could prove valuable against the relatively inexperienced Calbion and Talenore.

Reasons to worry: Many of the golden generation are retiring and Lakkvia's younger generation isn't really impressing at club level. Have been left behind in the AEFA by Senya and Gerenia in recent times.

Prediction: A solid team, but with so many strong teams in this group, they could be squeezed out of a play-off place. Expect them to make a fight of it though.
Tellia
Road to Senya: Won WMFA Group A convincingly, though they did drop points against bottom side Minarboria during the campaign.

Star Man: Marko Zajc. The Cherry Trees midfielder offers a combination of skill and experience in the heart of the midfield. He is this Tellian side’s beating heart.

One to Watch: Isaac Mahler. Most likely an option of the bench, but Mahler’s history from withdrawing from the team over hooliganism has often distracted from his qualities as a player. Expect him to either shine or go home early.

Reasons to be excited: For once Tellia go in to a tournament without any falling-outs, fights, or players withdrawing. Given they can usually be quite unpredictable because of this, some long overdue stability in the national side coupled with some experienced players returning to the squad could bode well for the Benacians.

Reasons to worry: After loosing last year’s Benacia Cup final to Elwynn, it’s clear that the glory days of Tellian football are long behind us, having won the first three editions of that tournament in consecutive years. The 2012 World champions look a shadow of their former selves as other teams, including hosts Senya, have surpassed them in terms of quality in recent years.

Prediction: The usual trap with the Tellians is that they could just as easily win the tournament as get knocked-out in the group stage. Whilst the trophy may just be beyond them this time out, many will predict them escaping this group. However a few stumbles and it isn’t hard to imagine them going home early this year either. But fans should hope for at least a play-off round appearance.
Calbion
Road to Senya: Narrowly edged out Leichenberg and the North Antarctic Domain in CTFA Group B to book their first ever appearance at an FMF World Cup.

Star Man: Llewelyn Wyn-Jones. Ran the show at the CiboTap last summer, ranking as the top goalscorer in that competition. His goals were instrumental in Pentyre Dragons' run to the CTFA Champions' League final last season.

One to Watch: Arthur Holmes. A tidy midfielder who pops up with the occasional goal, he could cause problems for opposition defences.

Reasons to be excited: Following a fantastic showing at last year's CiboTap, where they placed third, Calbain football is on something of an upwards trajectory, with a promising team looking to make an impact in Senya.

Reasons to worry: Comparatively inexperienced compared to the rest of the group, their 4-1 thrashing in the CiboTap semi-final last year at the hands of Alexandria could be a sign of things to come should they play a top level opponent.

Prediction: It's always difficult to impress on your début, but Calbion will be hoping to advance from the group. Anything beyond that will be a bonus.
Talenore
Road to Senya: Won EMUFA Group B by a point over Austbard, though they tailed off towards the end of the campaign.

Star Man: Kali Kalani. A proven goalscorer in League 1, his goals could be crucial to how Talenore perform in this tournament

One to Watch: Vernon Cristaldo. A strong midfielder based in Gerenia, Cristaldo can dictate tempo and contribute with goals.

Reasons to be excited: They made the semis of last summer's EMUs and have proven to be a very exciting team to watch. Have the potential to cause an upset in Senya.

Reasons to worry: Their qualification campaign was nothing short of abysmal, only scraping a 1-0 victory over the Passasian Unincorporated Territory, whilst also dropping 4 points against Ranentsi, including a humiliating 1-0 defeat to the North Keltian minnows on home soil.

Prediction: After two phenomenal tournaments in the past two summers, Talenore's fairy tale may just be over, given their struggles in the qualifiers, and they are only really here because Ranentsi and Austbard dropped points themselves. If they play the way they did against Ranentsi against any of the other teams in this group, they could be on the end of several hidings.

Senya wrote:Team ProfilesGroup B
Hamland
Road to Senya: Qualified as reigning champions, having defeated Tellia in the final back in 2015.

Star Man: Benjamin Craig. The 32-year-old may be coming to the end of his career, but he has proven time and time again what a crucial player he is to the Hammish national side.

One to Watch: Oliver Adamson. The New Kirrie Thistle man has bags of goals in his locker that will come in handy in a very even group.

Reasons to be excited: Despite the difficult teams in this group, on paper they should be able to escape it and make the quarters with a bit of luck.

Reasons to worry: Haven’t played a game since crashing out of last summer’s EMUs on home soil in the Group Stage. A lot of their domestic based players haven’t played for several months due to the civil war and are out of match fitness.

Prediction: Hamland are usually a solid team, but given the lack of match fitness and problems back at home, Hamland could end up going home very early in this tournament. If they do escape their group, it is very hard to see them replicating 2015 and going all the way.

Passas
Road to Senya: Topped EMUFA Group D without losing a game.

Star Man: Łukasz Dąbrowski. Has been a staple of Passas’s national team for almost a decade now, the striker is a proven winner with a lethal touch infront of goal.

One to Watch: Danijel Đorđević. The Sverige Tiem midfielder is a good reader of the game and could be vital in a successful campaign for Passas.

Reasons to be excited: Having won the EMU Championships last summer, Passas look like they have once again returned to being a world class team, and have looked clinical and professional in the qualifiers.

Reasons to worry: They didn’t really have to beat any significant sides on their way to the EMUs last summer, with Mercury and Hamland knocking themselves out before the final. Additionally, they always seem to stutter on the global stage, and given the quality of opposition in this group, they could find life very difficult in this competition.

Prediction: With Hamland’s fall from grace they should be on to challenge for the group title, but anything beyond the quarters will be hard to achieve.

Alexandria
Road to Senya: Alexandria were never really troubled on their way to winning CTFA Group E undefeated.

Star Man: Tamer Modrem. After a 42 million craite move to Eĵars Town last summer, making him the second most expensive player in Micrasian football history, Modrem will be expected to be a key player for the Alexandrians this summer.

One to Watch: Álexis Carrasco. Whilst hardly a secret, May Wanderers’ talisman is the kind of clinical striker that you need if you want to challenge for the World Cup trophy.

Reasons to be excited: The 2009 champions have perhaps one of the most star-studded squads at these championships, with top quality players in every position and with a proven track record of success, they will be very hard to stop.

Reasons to worry: They lost out on the CiboTap trophy last summer to Birgeshir and they haven’t made the semis since 2013. They also drew with Greater Sangun in qualification as they seem to be underperforming as of late.

Prediction: I think we’d all be stunned if Alexandria didn’t make the quarter-finals, and most people would have them down for winning the group, but a difficult quarter-final could await them. However, they do have the quality that on their day could go all the way in this tournament.

Victoria
Road to Senya: Edged Jingdao to qualify somewhat surprisingly in first place in AEFA Group D, beating the likes of Stormark and Flanders to make their first World Cup since 2011.

Star Man: Chris Valentine. One of the few players in the squad playing in a top league, his experience in defence will be called upon in this challenging group.

One to Watch: John Mynor. The domestic-based goalkeeper will surely be called into action plenty of times in this tournament. Expect to see a fair bit of him.

Reasons to be excited: With no expectations on them, this Victoria side could pull off a surprise or two if they can keep their opponents at bay.

Reasons to worry: In a group containing two former world champions, a three-time EMU Championship winning team, and an improving Vyktory side, it is difficult to imagine them walking home with anything other than four defeats.

Prediction: Bottom of their group. Anything else would require a big upset in a very tough group.
Vyktory
Road to Senya: Topped CTFA Group D without losing a match on their way to their maiden appearance in a World Cup.

Star Man: Jim Templar. The Bohemian Rhapsodies star is a lethal finisher, having proved that in Mercury’s Premier League over the past season.

One to Watch: Martin Pryce. A solid defender who will need to be at his very best against some potent strike forces in this group. Also capable of a spectacular goal, as showed in a recently friendly against Senya.

Reasons to be excited: Have picked up impressive results against top teams in friendlies and breezed through their qualifiers. They go into this tournament with form.

Reasons to worry: In a very tough group, Vyktory’s lack of experience at this level could count against them. They went out at the group stage in last year’s CiboTap and they could find the quick turnarounds and skill level challenging.

Prediction: The group will be hard for them, and they may end up requiring results elsewhere going their way. But with a bit of luck, they could very well make the knock-outs.

Senya wrote:Team ProfilesGroup C
Gerenia
Road to Senya: Comfortably topped AEFA Group A with 16 points to reach their third successive World Cup.

Star Man: Zelmar Toscano. A quality midfielder, who also can pop up with a goal every now and then, he could prove crucial in Gerenia's quest for a first World Cup title.

One to Watch: Karl Brükner. The KPSK Isherwood forward will be hoping to make a claim for the golden boot, having been in fine form for both club and country last season.

Reasons to be excited: A team in form, having not lost since the Copa Apollonia, and having conceded just six goals in their last ten matches, they will be a very difficult team to beat. They have bags of quality and a potent striker force which has proved itself time after time against high quality opposition.

Reasons to worry: Fourth place at the Copa Apollonia was disappointing for the Gerenians last summer, but like their rivals Senya, they don't have much in the way of success on the international trophy stage, bar a Copa Apollonia win in 2014.

Prediction: The Gerenians would love nothing more than to win the World Cup in their rivals' back yard, with their previous trip to the Snakepit resulting in a 4-0 win. Will have to fight hard to even win the group, but if they do,
they will certainly be amongst the favourites to go on and lift the trophy.
Craitland
Road to Senya: Needed a final day win in Shireroth to book their place in the World Cup on goal difference, as they retained their record of playing in every single World Cup.

Star Man: Freddie Gaärsen. A living legend, the 32-year-old still scores goals and will be looking to show his abilities to the World in one of his last World Cups.

One to Watch: Will Zóma. The in-form Eĵars Town striker will be looking to bag plenty of goals himself in a deadly striking partnership with Gaärsen.

Reasons to be excited: Their golden age may be a distant memory, but Craitland's side still contains many exciting players who meet the criteria of "world class". Will be a difficult team to face for any side in this tournament.

Reasons to worry: Fell in the semi-finals of last summer's Benacia Cup and may find it difficult in a tough group here.

Prediction: They should make it out of the group and at the very least make the quarter-finals, but Craitland aren't the unbeatables they once were, and whilst certainly capable, it will take something special for them to lift the trophy come August.
New Vaduz
Road to Senya: Shocked many by progressing from a very tight group in qualifying as they topped EMUFA Group E with 12 points.

Star Man: Bastian Großler. The Dyas Scitenhima Ĵets has been free-scoring for his club over the past few seasons, and will prove difficult to stop here.

One to Watch: Claus Vogel. Another very talented striker, he could be one trying to show his qualities and ability to attract a move to a bigger club.

Reasons to be excited: New Vaduz caused a few eyes to be raised by qualifying for the showpiece event, and will be hoping to prove to Micras that they can continue upsetting the odds on the global stage.

Reasons to worry: In a group containing several strong teams, in what could be argued to be the “Group of Death”, New Vaduz may just be out of their depth.

Prediction: Enjoy it whilst it lasts New Vaduz fans, don’t expect to make the knock-out rounds.
Birgeshir
Road to Senya: Never really looked in trouble in what was a potential banana skin of a qualifying group, amassing 16 points from a possible 18 on their way to topping CTFA Group C.

Star Man: Tёvrat Çıkthan. The Otaq Röyal forward has a record of scoring big goals on big occasions and could prove important if Birgeshir are to progress in the competition.

One to Watch: Ra-to-men Mahırojk. He scored the winner in last year’s CiboTap final, and expect him to come up with big goals again this summer.

Reasons to be excited: Having won the CiboTap last year and Birgeshir clubs dominating the CTFA club tournaments, Birgeshir have finally arrived on the international arena as a force to be reckoned with.

Reasons to worry: Have been rather wasteful in front of goal and don’t score much. A leaky defence has also been exposed in recent friendlies with Gerenia and Senya.

Prediction: Don’t rule out these guys making the quarter-finals at the very least, and don’t be too surprised if they go further than that either. That said, this group could also be a challenge for them.
Gotzborg
Road to Senya: Beat out Neo Patrova to top AEFA Group C on goal difference.

Star Man: Hans Schmitt. The Senyan based goalie has been in fine form for his club side Dyas Scitenhima Ĵets, and Gotzborg will need him to continue that success heading into the World Cup.

One to Watch: Kristian Jentzsch. The Tellian based veteran will offer a goal scoring threat in this very tight group.

Reasons to be excited: Gotzborg are a team that know how to get results, beating both Senya and Gerenia at last summer’s Copa Apollonia.

Reasons to worry: Only just edged out of a fairly easy qualification group and the high level of opposition in this group could just see them go home early.

Prediction: Whilst a knock-out round appearance is not beyond them, it does look unlikely.

Senya wrote:Team Profiles – Group D
Mercury
Road to Senya: Romped their way to victory in EMUFA Group A, though they did lose 1-0 away in Høgmårk.

Star Man: Joe Foxon. The talisman-come-captain will be looking to shine at another major tournament after Mercury's rather disappointing show at the EMUs last summer.

One to Watch: Nick Cooke. At just 18-years-old, he is the youngest player in the Mercurian squad, but after impressing at the recent Colney Cup, he could prove to be an asset if he is brought off of the bench.

Reasons to be excited: They've been landed a very favourable group and will be looking to make amends for a poor EMU championship last summer. They will be dangerous.

Reasons to worry: A poor EMU showing re-confirmed everyone's main problem with Mercury, they can bottle it on the big occasions.

Prediction: A major shout to win the tournament, anything less than a semi-final appearance will be considered poor.
Jingdao
Road to Senya: Needed penalties to defeat Fort Kolgrad to book a place in Senya in the AEFA play-offs, having finished runners up to Victoria in Group D on goal difference before an epic come-back win against Neo Patrova.

Star Man: Thibaut Van Steenhuyse. The Ramez White Stars man is young and full of potential, having previously represented Zeeburg and Nordzibola at the Benacia Cup.

One to Watch: Jos Degroot. Now based in Lakkvia, this fairly nomadic centre-back may just be trying to advertise himself to a new club, which could add to his competent centre-back play.

Reasons to be excited: A team comprising players from both the Apollonian Republic and Nordzibola, combined they could just unlock the doors that neither of those sides could ever muster on their own.

Reasons to worry: One of their defenders plays in the Senyan 5th tier, they are largely comprised of players with little history of playing with each other, the squad isn't that strong, and they will be on the end of a lot of abuse from the local crowd, with the 2014 River Warrior War fresh in the memory. It could all go so wrong for them.

Prediction: They will fight to make it out of the group stage, but don't expect these guys to be staying in Senya for the long-term.
Natopia
Road to Senya: Topped CTFA Group A with 17 points in a fairly tight group.

Star Man: Cedric Alexander. The Dyas-based man has been influential for his club side and he also showed his abilities at last year's CiboTap, being one of the few outstanding Natopian players.

One to Watch: Christopher Carlton. Having won the WMFA Cup with Les Verts Gaianiano last season, the midfielder will be hoping to make an impact on the international stage.

Reasons to be excited: A resurging side, unlucky not to have progressed from the CiboTap group stage last year, have some promising players in their ranks.

Reasons to worry: It's been a long time since they've been at a World Cup, and with better teams in this group it could be a struggle.

Prediction: They will definitely give this a fight, but realistically even making the play-offs would be considered successful for this team.
Elwynn
Road to Senya: Won WMFA Group C, scoring 22 goals in 6 games. Did suffer defeat in Karalakh and drew at home to Llæng.

Star Man: Yngvi Miskjalendzki. The Brabant Rovers man in the chief goal-getter for Elwynn.

One to Watch: Håkon Jadensazedeh. The Svorgas Scitenhima defender finally earns his call up to the senior team and will be looking to impress in the centre of defence.

Reasons to be excited: Coming off the back of a Benacia Cup triumph where they defeated both Craitland and Tellia, Elwynn will be full of confidence going into this tournament.

Reasons to worry: Produced some poor performances in qualifying and were leaky at the back. A repetitive defensive display here could see them embarrassed.

Prediction: Hard to see them getting knocked out in the Group, but also hard to see them advancing past the play-off round, given the quality of Group C's teams.
Nova England
Road to Senya: Won EMUFA Group C following a close race between themselves and Juclandia.

Star Man: Paul Gimbel. The Tow Law striker is full of goals and will be Nova England's main threat in this tournament.

One to Watch: Michael Henderson. Don't be fooled by the fact he plays his club football in Lucerne, Henderson is a very skilled striker who could cause the defences in this group serious problems.

Reasons to be excited: Have got fairly lucky with the draw, and should be expected to progress to the play-offs. Finished runners-up at last year's EMUs, and will be a force at this competition.

Reasons to worry: It's been a while since they won a trophy and with a wider and more talented array of teams at the World Cup than at the EMUs, they could struggle.

Prediction: Be suprised if they don't make the play-offs. Be suprised if they get beyond the play-offs.

The Senyan capital Svorgas was caked in the summer sun as hundreds of thousands of people descended upon it for the opening match of the FMF World Cup, which would be taking place in the national stadium, the Snakepit, a venue that holds 115,000 spectators. The atmosphere was brilliant in the hours leading up to the game, with many taking in the nearby fan park, holding a mix of family entertainment and football mini-games, live music being played alongside many vendors distributing flares and smoke bombs to the ultras, in preparation for their tifo for the game. Next to the fan park was a public park, where more entertainment had been set up, with different foods on offer and a big screen that would broadcast the game for the many fans who had not been lucky enough to grab a ticket to go to the game. The day had been declared a national holiday, to give as many people as possible the chance to watch the game.

Some families enjoying a more kid-friendly part of the local park ahead of the Senya-Lakkvia game.

The opponents were Lakkvia, who after qualifying easily were tipped to be tough opponents, with Senyan manager Draco Sanchez in the pre-match press conference quick to reminds everyone how good of a team they were, noting that "they can beat you if you think they're easy" and that Senya would "have to be at [their] best to win". However, most pundits before the match were predicting a Senyan win.

As the game drew nearer, those with tickets left the fan parks and headed for the stadium, and with a full capacity, making plenty of noise, the stage was set. Senyans don't really do opening ceremonies, but instead, the 15,000 odd visiting Lakkvian fans and neutrals worldwide on their television sets were treated to an enormous tifo showing the devil with the words "WELCOME TO SENYA. WELCOME TO HELL" written in big bold letters. from supporters from all sides of the ground set off flares and smoke bombs as the stadium was engulfed in red and green smoke for a few moments.

Chants of "SENYA" rang around as the two teams made their way out onto the field, where the national anthems played, first Lakkvia, where the tune had to be turned up to be herd, before a very passionate rendition of the Senyan national anthem was sang by 100,000 in the Snakepit. The teams shook hands, and then, kicked off, signalling the start of the 11th FMF World Cup...
