2019 Craitish provisional squad and warm-up games

Postby Craitman » Fri Jun 07, 2019 1:41 am

Craitland manager Zyx Dermäna's thirty-one-man training squad has been announced as the team looks to arrange a number of warm-up friendly matches prior to competing in the World Cup in Birgeshir later this summer.

Of the players included in the squad, all bar one competed in this year's qualifying campaign, with all thirty players utilised in the first half of the year included. The additional call-up falls to goalkeeper Jesse Lydveldt after another strong season with Sverige Tiem earns him a return to the setup; fellow stopper Tim Ula misses-out after an inconsistent season in Tellia. Another player back from a hiatus is striker Zen Daviddlaw; having failed to be capped since 2014, he appeared from the bench in the team's final two friendlies and added a goal against the Iron Cult. Free agent Markko Christiansen's inclusion is arguably the most surprising, having had no continual domestic competition this season after the collapse of Gerenia.

With experience galore, there are no uncapped call-ups this year, with just two players whose international careers began this year included. Right-back Asil Karganov's move to Kealb last summer has paid dividends with him impressing in his increased game time, while midfielder Thijs Vorgensen becomes the first Zandarijn-based player to be capped by Craitland. Entering the international fold relatively late, the Zandt-born ethnic Crait has been a key factor for Prins Haven Atletisch in recent years as they have won four titles in the past five seasons, and won his first cap in Wednesday's victory with a late cameo.

However, one notable absence this year is Freddie Gaärsen following his retirement earlier this week. The record appearance holder also vacated his captaincy in the process, and Dermäna has admitted to being uncertain over who will take the armband on a permanent basis next, with a number of players acting as skipper during the qualifiers. It is thought a new permanent captain will be named before the team travel to Birgeshir, however.

The full squad is listed below, organised by playing position. This will be narrowed-down to a final 23 for the World Cup ahead of the submission deadline in a few weeks' time:

Craitland will play FMF newcomers Alduria in their first World Cup warm-up friendly next Wednesday. The match will act as a curtain-raiser for the newly-built Imperial Field in the city of Narbonne as the Aldurian team will line-up for the first time ever.

Lakkvia have been lined-up for the Craits' next friendly, to be played at Oesst Darrä Arenä on June 19th. This will be the teams' third meeting, with Craitland having won by two goals on both prior occasions, and comes with Lakkvia having missed-out on a place in the World Cup finals this summer for the first time since 2014.

Alduria 3-2 Craitland
6' - Á. Carrasco
42' - H. Zensen
60' - T. Modrem
84' - F. Bousquet

90' - W. Zóma

Alduria's first international brought about a first win in impressive style against Craitland. Following the spiritual line of the Caputian team which struggled in this year's qualifiers before its demise, Alduria needed not to wait long for their opening goal. A swift ball over the Craitish defence by Tamer Modrem found his former-Alexandrian teammate Álexis Carrasco running through, and the forward took just two touches to control the ball and knock it past the closing Jamie Vallensen. An otherwise closely-matched first half was devoid of chances up until a few minutes before the break, when the visitors found an equaliser through Hänä Zensen. A move forward by right-back Daniel Hjansen saw the ball crossed in from the byline before evading the defence and dropping to Zensen, who made no mistake in powerfully sidefooting home through the crowd for his 20th international goal.

After the recess, Alduria were noticeably the more cohesive side, which garnered much vocal support from the crowds gathered in Narbonne. A quarter of an hour after the restart, during which Vallensen was kept on his toes, provider Modrem turned scorer himself. Jean-Pierre d'Oliviera's meander into the box was ended with a blocked shot which Modrem was in the prime spot to repossess, and the midfielder drilled the ball home from outside the box into the bottom-right. Changes from the bench kept the Aldurians' attack fresh, with Javier de la Fuente down the wing and François Bousquet replacing Modrem troubling the Craitish defenders, with the latter of the pair making it three in style with under ten minutes to go. A foul on Andrew Miller outside the box set-up the midfielder to strike a perfect free-kick into the top-left of the 'keeper's net from roughly twenty yards out, leaving the wall paralysed. The Craits managed to pull the deficit back just as injury time began, however, through a Will Zóma header from close range after strong wide play from Juan Pellegrino made room to deliver a teasing cross for the stooping striker.

Zóma became the fourth Crait to hit the thirty-goal mark in internationals, but his personal achievement was marred by the result, with the team's preparations for Birgeshir not off to the best start. They play Lakkvia in a week's time on home soil with hope of a better outcome. Alduria on the other hand will be proud of their début, even with their players' collective wealth of experience with other nations, and a win like this will instil some national pride in the young nation just finding its feet since its foundation on Micras.

Following the group draw for the 2019 World Cup, Craitland's final warm-up friendly has been confirmed. Having avoided each other in the draw, the Craits will face fellow WMFA powerhouses Tellia in Romero - perhaps surprisingly the first time Craitland will ever play in Tellia - on July 5th; a week ahead of the team's opening match against Nova England.

Craitland 4-0 Lakkvia
6' - H. Zensen
22' - J.M. Juliaĵsen
36' - J.M. Juliaĵsen
74' - M. Densar

Craitland returned to winning ways after defeat to Alduria with a comfortable victory over Lakkvia. Three first-half goals put the result beyond doubt as the Craits aim to decide their final 23-man squad before their next match against Tellia. Midfielder Hänä Zensen scored in successive matches with a calm sidefooted finish after being put through in space within the first ten minutes before Mercury-based striker Jan-Morteņ Juliaĵsen hit a brace. The 25-year-old's first was fortunate, with the ball being gifted after the 'keeper palmed Zen Daviddlaw's shot back to him for a simple finish, while the second was much more impressive. A move forward led to David Loresen gaining possession deep on the left before chipping a cross in, where Juliaĵsen hit it first time on the swivel and laced the volley into the goalie's top-left corner with his weaker left foot from the edge of the box.

Lacklustre Lakkvia evidenced why they struggled in qualifying this spring, with little to offer as a retort to going three goals down, and had no resistance to Craitland's fourth in the second half. Mikel Densar, coming off the bench to replace Perryman, struck his first international goal with a darting run and teasing finish that slotted over the line following a one-on-one with the 'keeper as Ketil av Silmahamnum was unable to get back quick enough to stop the shot. That score secured a four-goal win for a Craitland side looking at a very tricky group in Birgeshir next month, with momentum now potentially in their favour again.

With the team's next fixture coming after the deadline for squad submission for the finals, Zyx Dermäna has confirmed his final 23 players to travel to Birgeshir next month. As a result, eight players who have been training with the squad will have to support the team from home.

Of the four goalkeepers called-up, Jesse Lydveldt is, as expected, the one to miss-out on the three allocated places. Included on domestic form after not playing in any qualifiers, the three stoppers who did compete in the WMFA campaign are chosen instead.

In defence, only right-back David Jansen misses-out; his first tournament exclusion in three years after a spell as deputy to Daniel Hjansen. Asil Karganov will go to his first senior tournament in his place.

With the team's usual abundance of midfield talent, four prospects will not be on the plane to Birgeshir. Winger Markko Christiansen, whose initial inclusion was a slight surprise after a season out of action, will play no part, with the Pellegrino brothers the side's primary wide threats now. In the centre, İlker Keremov won't see his third World Cup yet, while Äthen Aärel is left at home for the fifth tournament in a row as others' form impresses. Zandt-based Thijs Vorgensen also misses-out after earning his first cap last month.

With legendary striker Freddie Gaärsen's retirement, Craitland's number ten jersey is given to someone else, while only four forwards are in the final squad. Aidan Keĵinz, who hit four goals against New Vaduz in 2017's group stage, and Zen Daviddlaw, who returned to the international setup after a few years' hiatus only last month, are the two who won't travel.

In addition to the outgoing Gaärsen's vacating of the national captaincy, Alexis Proteņ has now been handed the armband on a permanent basis having worn it on a number of occasions previously.
