USSO membership referendum

Post by Craitman »

Craits throughout the kingdom have today taken to the polls to vote on the future of the nation's membership in the Union of States around the Sovereign Oceans (USSO), as engineered by incumbent Prime Minister Iņa Aärnesen. The plebiscite, a key policy of the Liberal-Centre Alliance's manifesto ahead of their first government majority win in last September's election, saw citizens asked a sole question with "yes" and "no" options as answers.

While vote-counting will proceed into the night, with the final result expected to be completely confirmed by the weekend after official checks are made, exit polls are suggesting strong support for leaving the USSO; or at least reducing Craitland's role in the organisation, given the question asking whether citizens would like Craitland to remain a full member or not. Whether the actual result correlates to the oft-maligned exit polling remains to be seen, however.

Re: USSO membership referendum

One month to the day following Craitland's USSO membership referendum, which resulted in an overwhelming majority against full membership, Prime Minister Iņa Aärnesen has announced intentions to reduce Craitland's position to that of "observer" in the organisation.

In light of a number of weeks' parliamentary discussions, the final decision on proceeding after the referendum was made through a vote which saw fewer than twenty objections.

Aärnesen is expected to address the USSO's Political Consultative Committee in person this weekend to declare the nation's desires to reduce its affiliations; a move which comes shortly after fellow founding member Gerenia's unexpected announcement of a full withdrawal from the USSO earlier today.

These two events coupled with a recent stagnancy in the USSO's public development - with Jingdao and Passio-Corum favouring increased collaboration solely with one another - would appear to be cause for alarm for one of Micras' more notable supranational collectives in recent years.

Emily Saryaan, spokesperson for Tsarina Naya, formerly a member of the Lijst Liberaal, has congratulated the Prime Minister for her timely response. She did, however, warn that the observer status she would seek does not go "far enough" in the eyes of the more than 8 million people who voted in the referendum. "Zandarijn and the country as a whole voted overwhelmingly, I believe they deserve a clear break from the USSO. I hope the Prime Minister will be in consultations with all political parties, from across Craitland, to establish a firm position which is sustainable and addresses the concerns of the nation".

We do have to remember that, as decisive a referendum it was, almost four million Craits believed maintaining full membership was preferable. Also, given the referendum made no mention of leaving the USSO entirely, we should be wary of assuming that all those who voted against full membership were in support of severing all ties.

The move to declare a desire to become an "observer" is a result of parliamentary discussions, where a number of MPs are staunchly in support of the USSO, so a reasonable compromise has taken a whole month's worth of talks to be agreed :)
