To the Prefect of Shirekeep

The often renovated, and not infrequently burnt, Prefectoral complex in the capital city of Shirekeep. Charged with the thankless task of civic administration in the most malodorous and ungovernable city ever conceived.

To the Prefect of Shirekeep

Ben Falhammer, Colonel of the 1st Apollonian Guards, stood atop his armoured personnel carrier at the gates of Shirekeep. With Lichkeep secure, on the orders of the ex-Kaiseress, the Guard had been finally called into action by their Lord Marshal, the Minister of Military Affairs, Balarak Alaion. A proud Goldshirian, Falhammer had served all his life in the Guards. To now be without the Mira Rayanora Minor as Kaiser, a person who was Kaiser when his grandfather was born, felt odd. Yet the turmoil of her final few months in office was something he had tired of but something he knew all to well would happen. When a vacuum occurs in the power of any country, it sucks all those in to vie to fill it. He had seen it before in lesser countries but he had never thought it would happen in Shireroth. To him, it was a stain on her time on the throne. At least now, some order was being restored.

A cabbage lunatic ran from an outhouse at the Colonel. Before his troops could respond, Falhammer drew his pistol and shot the crazed man dead. It was a pity that so many had become lunatics like the man. Death was a relief and a blessing for them. He grabbed the radio microphone from his subaltern and began to deliver the following message to the Prefect of Shirekeep.
Prefect of the Imperial County,

You are hereby ordered by the Ministry of Military Affairs to surrender the City of Shirekeep to the Imperial Government along with the Imperial County. The declaration of sovereignty you have promulgated is now void in reasoning as well as legality. The interim Imperial Government wishes to restore order and sanity to the city. It is requested that you open the gates. Failure to do so in 24 hours, or an acknowledgment that you no longer control the gates due to the Cabbage Insanity spreading amongst the populace, shall result in the Apollonian Guard entering the city to carry out its objectives by force.

A messenger, identifiable from her uniform as a soldier in the Safirian Army, walks up to the gates carrying a letter, which she then teleports into Col. Falhammer's hands. Kai's handwriting becomes less and less legible as the letter wears on.

Shirekeep 10276

To whom it may concern:

As you read this, you have no doubt just ordered me to surrender or vacate the Imperial City. Know esteemed sir/madam/&c.that while I would normally at least begrudgingly do so I have been driven from my offices and locked in my house by those among the deputies of the county sheriff and among the city police who have succumbed to the maddening cabbage. I have alerted my Empress and she has deployed those from the 7th Infantry Regiment normally tasked with guarding the Safirian embassy and such to aid the fight against the cabbage, but they are at best barely holding the line.

I am a prisoner in my own castle.

Shirekeep belongs to the cabbage now

Gods help you.

"Two hundred years! Two hundred! Who could ever have suspected that she would abdicate?" mumbled one of the guards who stood on the wall that overlooked the Shirerithian capital. Guard Socrates was a Kildarian who served in the Guard, just like his dad, his grandfather, etc.
He had been loyal to the Kaiseress, as was his duty, and felt some doubt when he had heard that the Minister of Military Affairs himself had taken charge over the Apollonian Guard. As far as he knew, the Guard had always been commanded by the Kaisers, and in their absence by the Prefect. So much power in the hands of a man who wasn't Kaiser... could this be called safe?
Socrates sighed. He didn't look forward to enter the capital. And while night fell, it became clear that everywhere within those walls bonfires were burning to get rid of the deaths. The smoke filled the air and gave the guard shivers.

After a quick discussion with the Safirian soldier, Falhammer took his map of the city out of his pocket and plotted a route with his force into the City. He quickly ordered a tank from the 1st Apollo Cavalry to fire its cannon and then engineers to use a spigot mortar to blow the southern Gate of Shireroth apart.

"Alright men, we are moving to secure and rescue the Prefect of Shirekeep and restore order to our great Imperial City. There is a regiment of Safirians guarding the Prefect and those areas still free from the cabbage craze. Our orders are that any person who impedes our progress, whether cabbage crazed or not, shall be dealt with accordingly. If you are attacked by a lunatic, you are empowered by law to use all necessary force to stop him. In many ways, you'll be doing them a mercy. Let's move out!"

The Guards entered the city.

Socrates felt like he could die when he entered the city. He was one of the last soldiers of his brigade to enter through the destroyed gate, so he felt quite safe. Others would most likely do the dirty work for him. But once he went through that gate, he was shocked. He didn't recognise the streets anymore: everywhere there was dirt, blood and dead bodies. Bodies of people, intoxicated and who had died even before the invasion of the Guard.

"No time to rest, men!" he heard his commander shout.

As Monty and the Apollonian Guard enter the city, they would notice Vai Ansin leading a company of Safirians tasked with defending the city gate that had just been blown up. She salutes Alaion, then walks over to him, speaking telepathically.

<Greetings. Corporal Vateusi has informed me that you are moving against the cabbage and to secure the Prefect? Then allow me to fall in at your side, milord.>

Falhammer ducked as a cabbage flew through the air. It hit one of his Guardsmen square in the chest, momentarily winding him as the armour took the full force of the blow. Falhammer, standing on the back of his armoured jeep, carefully aimed his pistol at the thrower and fired. The crazed lunatic fell down, dead.

They were only a few feet away from Raynor's Keep. Vai Ansin, the Safir in charge of the Prefect's protection, communicated that the Prefecture was now fully secure. The main Government Quarter was secure, only the Judex remaining outside of Imperial control for now. The Landsraad, Raynor's Keep and Malarbor were safe.

More cabbages flew through the air but a burst of machine gun fire and flamethrower silenced their wielders.

"Inform MoMA and the Steward that Shirekeep is nearly secure. Only an eighth of the city remains outside of our control. Invite the Prefect to the Raynor's Keep."

Oh, there had been pockets of resistance, despite the news of the Prefect's capture. Revolutionaries could be like that. Some still remained around the Imperial Judex and the Temple of Mors, using the nearby canals as defensive barriers; but the bridges were being overrun from the north and southwest. And the University... well, it was practically a law of nature that universities tended to join in on revolutions. Nothing like putting a lot of young idealists together to generate notions of glory and destiny and freedom. But they'd been mostly content to occupy the school itself and barricade themselves in. Good thing, too; the railway express building just to the north was still a nest of cabbageheads.

Ohhh yes. Cabbage madness. Not just the downtown railway express, either; St. Zor up north was infested, too. The few people in a position to make guesses figured that people had carried cabbages around on the railway lines. Lots of people crammed together, heading off in all different directions... that's the way to spread a contagion, all right. Lucky for the east bank that the Apollonian Guard had taken out the nest at Mattlore Devious Station. Gave them a toehold in that part of the city, too. Supposedly they'd started getting in men and supplies from Goldshire through there, though for some reason they hadn't gotten through to the airport yet.

The Guard had been doing all right, in fact. They'd got most of the city proper, and its entrances. The fact that the three bridges into Lichbrook and Lichkeep had been knocked out had helped, even if the last one had... deconstructed the former Kaiseress. The undead seemed to want to stay out of it, anyway. Probably a good idea. As for the rest, the bridges over the East Elwynn were all in the hands of the Guards, and so were the ones on the Western and Northern Channels, except for the one nearest the University. Most of the city proper was in their hands, they were closing in on the few pockets of resistance left; cabbageheads kept popping in in places outside their zones of control, but not enough in any one place. Outside the Channels things were more spotty, but they'd managed to get a bunch of the railway lines. Made sure they had lines open to Fort Foley and the Lukedu Center for the Exploding Arts. I'm not sure which one would cause more damage if it fell into enemy hands, especially with... some kind of creatures coming down from that way.

But then the riots started. Hard to say why. Maybe call it... a communication issue.

A lot of citizens had been staying out of it up till then, you see... but when soldiers start trooping through a city and shooting people, a loved one maybe... even if they were a cabbagehead, that kind of thing doesn't win you many friends. And rumors started spreading around. The Steward was being held prisoner in Raynor's Keep by the Guard and being made to sign off on official orders. The liches had got those weirdo mole-people friends of theirs to help create the cabbages as some kind of diabolical plot. The Elwynnese were bringing in bears to eat people while they burned down the city and took peoples' explosives away. Parts of the city were being burned down anyway, it was faster to get rid of cabbages. The folks in charge of all sides were in it together. ...that sort of thing.

And then? The Defacing of the Temple.

The Cedrist Temple was too near the front lines, you see. The Imperial Guard had taken it the day before; it'd been damaged, of course, but not so bad. But when they'd started pushing through toward the Judex, they hit the worst of the resistance, fought for hours back and forth between the two buildings. And then? Something, somewhere, hit the explosives in the basement. The Temple had a supply on hand for La Fiesta de la B0O0O0/\/\ and other holidays. It took out most of the Temple, one of the city's holiest sites. On the bright side, though, it did start some fires around the cabbageheads south of Raynor Village.

At any rate... no one could point at exactly who was responsible for touching off the fuse. The only thing people knew for sure was that it'd been in the hands of the Guard. For most people, that was enough.

The district around the National Stadium and the Hippodrome went first. People gathered there, angry and shouting, and the student from the University across the Channel hooked up with them. They were stopped before they reached the Lukedu Center... barely. Talk about a powder keg. But they haven't been pushed back yet.

Around the same time, people poured into Anandja Stadium a little ways north, and Dockland Stadium across the river. Neither was in the Guard's grip yet, so they started rallying and starting bonfires, getting themselves riled up. Self-contained so far, but on the boil.

And then a group started carrying on inside the Guard's zone itself, over in the Old City. That's some serious cojones, there, rioting right down the street from the government buildings. But all those twisty little streets to barricade or hide in... well, they might be better off than you might think.

The city's turning into a war zone. Welcome to Balgurd, son, 'cos that's what Shirekeep is, now.

Now if you'll excuse me... I'm gonna go duck back in the cellar. Sorry, only room for one.

The countryside was swarming with bearskin clad holy warriors, from 300ft up they looked like demented black ants in a frenzy – little grey puffs of smoke intermittently erupted as, now and again, one of the Icebears decided to amuse himself, and those around him, by taking another pot-shot at the looming grey fortress.

Sarlashkar Sarbaz reclined back into the seat in which he was firmly harnessed, the vibrations of the twin rotors of the Tordenhauk  raced along the length of his body as they shook the fuselage of the VTOL attack-rotorcraft. The vibrations we jarring the other twenty-three passengers as well as, somewhat more distressingly, the two 500-pound Mark 82 unguided bombs that were currently cradled in their ramp-launchers installed at the rear of the aircraft where – in a sane world – the Sarlashkar would have expected to have calmly walked down the cargo-loading ramp to have a civilised chat with the Garrison Commander, or the MoMA, whoever was there to talk to really. However this was not a sane world, and the method of establishing contact was now going to be rather more direct.

Twenty-minutes earlier four OAH Karrar UCAV's had crossed into the air space of the Imperial County. Their controllers were sat comfortably in an air-conditioned bunker somewhere underneath Fort Eluin. At this precise moment Sarbaz envied the little armchair-warriror bastards more than they could know. Although armed with Stingers and Hellfire missiles their purpose was to complete the tactical picture provided by the electromagnetic survey arrays installed on the Panopticon Horus that was held 25km back giving an overview of the battlespace in and around Shirekeep from within the notional safety of Elwynn Proper, such as it was. During the two hour flight across Alalehzamin from Ardashirshahr the Sarlaskhar had been able to peer out the cabin window down onto a wasteland of abandoned villages, collapsed irrigation canals and the scorched earth and blackened stalks of burnt cabbage fields as far as the eye could see. The Cabbage blight had gripped the land in its deadly embrace and on the few roads that the aerial armada flew over the Sarlashkar could abandoned and wrecked motor-vehicles, civilian cars and lorries mostly where refugees had either been caught in collisions or bottlenecks and had been overrun by those who had already succumbed to the sickness, and who now suffered who knows what fate. The best that any caught by the damned could hope for is a swift and merciful death. Would many at all be so lucky? More worryingly the rotorcraft had passed over a burnt out Mobile Quarantine Station, if that line didn't hold there would ultimately be nothing worth fighting for. Sarbaz only hoped that the fools in Eliria would realise that in time.

The pilot and co-pilot were now talking into their headpieces as the Tordenhawk began to bank sharply to the left, making a steep turn before levelling out and beginning a shallow descent.

Somewhere over their heads, high above, was a Gr-100 Starstreak, one of a pair, providing air cover for the 25 rotorcraft, one armed for air to air combat, the other equipped with a Dverghallen L-1 Lokiskappen Electronic Warfare System module and two Air Launched Anti-Radiation Missiles intended to deal with any ground-based opponent that might be tempted to lock on. Enemy air activity had been negligible. The Panopticon had reported three radar signatures fitting the profile of attack helicopters forming up on a flightpath that would have took them towards Ardashirshahr, but that had been three days ago, no actually it had been four, and there had been nothing since – at least not in the Southern Sector anyway. There had been the terrible foray of the Dragons towards Eliria and the 5th Tactical Aviation Division had borne the brunt of that assault. The dragons had, not without cost, been driven away before they had devoured but a dozen senators and some stray cudgellers. Not without cost. Five of the 'Emergency Fighters' had been flamed by dragonbreath whilst another six had been rendered inoperable for a week by what had been described as 'claw marks'. It proved what anyone sensible would have surely known – that the Emergency Fighter Programme was a fools errand. Even without having to face demonic opponents those propeller engined aircraft were relics of another age. They would need to be up-gunned and already the Mess-hall gossip was that the machine guns were going to be ripped out in order to provide extra carry capacity for second pair of hardpoints. Dragon-slaying apparently requires rocket launchers. Mercifully that was a headache for the 5th and not the 4th.

The pilot was now talking to the Sarlashkar, the Tordenhawks were now formed up for their attack-run. Twenty-five rotorcraft in line abreast, approaching Fort Foley from the South, with the river to their backs. The pilot was requesting authorisation to proceed. Resistance, both ground and air was expected to be fierce, desperate in fact. If anyone in this lead strike party was to survive the next twenty-four hours it would be a miracle. 100/00/01e Stafkompani, Echo Company of 100/03e Jagarbataljon (led by Overstelojtnant Roemer in person) and the Command Stafkompani of the 4e Tactical Aviation Division were to knock on the roof whilst the 100e Elwynnbrigaden (Pansar) was to roll up to the front door... and pound it with cannon fire. The tanks had rolled out of their dugouts on  Filadin of 634 and now finally they were in a position to cross the frontier and provide the firepower that the Icebears would need to gain a lodgement in the city, which could then be cleared as circumstances permitted.

Jaqen Sarbaz felt a tightening in his stomach as heard himself giving the command to proceed. The loadmaster sat next to him unbuckled his harness and ran down to the back of the rotorcraft, clipping himself onto a new hook at the far end by the ramp-launcher mechanism. Suddenly the noise of the outside world intruded as the cargo ramp began to lower. Over this noise and the reverberations of the engine could be heard a shrill electronic whirring – the rotary cannon slung under the nose of the Tordenhawk was powering up.

There was no further time for consideration as the rotorcraft dipped its nose and began to accelerate into a further steep dive.

It had begun.

A fair enough point, it is quite nice out and about today - once I'm bored, pissed and sunburnt I'll go and napalm some Dragons over in the non-Anunia free-play zone that currently revolves around Jacobus' blessed head.
