THE SIXTH SYNKLETOS

Government:
Dimokratia Avyi: 8 seats
Kómma ton Syntiritikón Monarchikoí: 8 seats
Kómma ton Apoikión: 8 seats
Liberal Trade Alliance: 7 seats

Opposition:
Ergatikó Kómma tou Sosialismoú: 14 seats
Fileléfthero Kómma Foní: 13 seats

Non-aligned:
Nivardomski Otechestvenofrontovska: 3 seat (Votes against Government)
OVERVIEW

By any normal reckoning, the elections held in the year 1642 Ab Nortone must be considered a catastrophic defeat for the governing party led by Andreas Metaxas. Indeed, so precipitous was the collapse of the Conservative vote, itself still split between two parties now on a diminished equal share of the vote, that it was a matter of considerable public speculation as to whether Metaxas would be able to carry on in office at all. Certainly Mr Tzimiskes, the leader of the KSM had reached out to the moderate wing of the DA in the hope of bringing over enough defectors to make the KSM an attractive junior coalition partner for the liberal FKF. However, the liberal leader, Ms Athanasia Demetria, had her own share of problems, finishing behind the Workers Party and unable to bridge the bitter personal animosity between herself and her socialist counterpart Maria Tatiana Demetriou.

The reason for the collapse of the conservative vote was held to have many causes, the merger of the metropolitan Kingdom into a single Euranikon Theme, was particularly ill-received in the Felixian Theme, which remained defiantly proud of its separate identity, forged in the fires of the Euran War, and increasingly looked away from Vey towards the Pallisican dominated Port Felix Wool Markets for their economic livelihood. Many amongst the electorate were increasingly disappointed by the bitterly slow and underfunded pace of reconstruction and held Metaxas personally responsible for the stories of corruption and mismanagement that had begun to circulate freely in the daily press. Whilst the Mesazōn had been vigorous in routing out and punishing the most egregious examples, there was a feeling that corruption and graft had become an all too prevalent malaise and undercurrent to his administration.

Set against this was the growth of overseas trade and improving contacts with Passio-Corum, Alexandria and Shireroth. Indeed it was ultimately the colonial and mercantile parties that would come to the rescue of the beleaguered conservative coalition. The growth of Nivardom especially had redrawn the electoral map and given an increased weight to the Kómma ton Apoikión and the newly reformed Liberal Trade Alliance.

This outcome had however been put in jeopardy by the bitterly contested elections in the Molivadisan Theme where the Nivardomski Otechestvenofrontovska had campaigned on a nakedly xenophobic, anti-Constancian and anti-migrant platform. The Liberal Trade Alliance, under reformed Mariner, Walter Poldark, had been no less robust in its campaign tactics, and thus, when the LTA swept the board, the NO immediately cried foul and numerous recounts followed, culminating with an appeal held before the supreme court in Vey in 1643, which was interrupted by the arrival of the dread Shamal wind blowing in off the irradiated Zjandarian steppe.

Only in recent days have the LTA's record breaking win in the Nivardom electoral district been confirmed and the electoral results validated by the courts, allowing, finally, for the formation of a new government and the commencement of the next session of the Synkletos.

THE SEVENTH SYNKLETOS

Image

Government:
Kómma ton Enopoíisi: 44 seats

Opposition:
Ergatikó Kómma tou Sosialismoú: 14 seats
Nivardomski Otechestvenofrontovska: 2 seats
OVERVIEW

Stung by electoral defeat in the elections of 1642 and effectively deposed by the Autokrateira as a consequence of the passage of the Disclosure and Access to Information Act, the Mesazōn prevaricated in the calling of the mandated triennial election to the Synklētos. In this he was aided by the escalation of tensions between the SANE and USSO blocs as a consequence of the ongoing Hammish Civil War and the brief War of Jingdaoese Immolation in 1647.

Constitutional paralysis, combined with frustrations over the slow pace of economic and social development, has led to a simmering discontent on the streets of Vey which is now boiling up into outright anger and defiance of the government.

Image

With the passage of the Constitutional Settlement (Amendment I) Act of 1648, the royal government has the legislative apparatus, subject to a referendum, to bypass the Synklētos and introduce new laws directly.

The Mesazōn, supporting the introduction of so-called "personal rule" by the royal government, backed the monarchy by orchestrating, under the guise of an election, an unprecedented campaign of "electoral coordination". Deploying newly appointed Ypostratigoi (Major-Generals) of the Constancian Armed Forces to the Metropolitan and Colonial Themes, the Mesazōn was able to coordinate the Army, the Home Guard and activists of the Dimokratia Avyi in the takeover of the offices of the Fileléfthero Kómma Foní, Kómma ton Syntiritikón Monarchikoí, Kómma ton Apoikión as well as the forcible closure of many hostile media outlets. Only the Ergatikó Kómma tou Sosialismoú and the Nivardomski Otechestvenofrontovska, with their battle hardened cadres of street fighters, were able to fend off the baton-wielding soldiery and defend their fortified offices and well-honed ballot stuffing operations.

Finally, on the 4th Day of Cowtide, Vey lay locked under the guard of the Army. A retinue of guardsmen stood by the Mesazōn as he welcomed the returning Dikastís he pointed out to the guardsmen the socialist and Nivardom ultranationalists who had slipped the net of his returning agents in the themes and been returned to office. These were duly arrested and spent the remainder of the day under lock and key, accused of pro-Jing agitation and subversion. The remaining forty-four parliamentarians were duly assembled before the Mesazōn whereupon he congratulated them and informed them that they would, henceforth, be enrolled as deputies of the Party of Unification, under an obligation to be of service to their majesties ever afterwards. If there were any doubts or objections in regards to this new turn of events, the glistening bayonets of the guardsmen lining the chamber offered a succinct and sufficient answer. This then was the "Cowtide Coup".

Fileléfthero Kómma Foní: 12 seats
Kómma ton Apoikión: 7 seats

Opposition:
Ergatikó Kómma tou Sosialismoú: 10 seats
OVERVIEW

Image

The untimely death of Andreas Metaxas was the start of the weaponization of simmering tensions between the Nivardomski Otechestvenofrontovska (Nivardom's Fatherland Front) and the rest of the dissidents in Nivardom. Despite being besieged by forces led by Strategos Paxos, the NO maintained control of 93% of Nivardom. The few prominent buildings not under occupation were the small Bovic cathedral and the consulate of Shireroth. The Natopian consulate, as well as government buildings, the local library and theatre, supermarkets and the three police offices, remained under NO control.

The unfortunate collapse of the Empire of the Alexandrians greatly affected the Kingdom, politically, economically, and socially. Alexandria was a major trading partner, as well as a source of significant Constancian revenue, both state and private, as well as technology transfer. Alexandria also possessed a strong Constancian emigre community, with the Empire having employed a good portion of Constancia’s highly-educated, highly-skilled, and semi-skilled workers. Socially, it was common for Constancian families to have a relative employed or studying in Alexandria, almost always serving as household breadwinner. Those who had survived the Alexandrian flu soon found themselves looking for work in Natopia, Shireroth, or had returned home. Those who did not were an additional financial burden to their already-struggling families.

The death of Andreas Metaxas also resulted in a power vacuum that was serendipitously filled by the former Alexandrian leader, Jaime Augustin Joaquin Primo de Aguilar. The elder statesman of the Empire of the Alexandrians entered office first as Kanikleios to Basileusa Cleo, where his counsel and experience was put to good use. The appointment of esteemed former Constancian leader Basil Tzimiskes as Mesazōn did much to calm the public mood, reeling from the recent war with Jingdao and the shocking loss of its leader amidst the continuing defiant insurrection in Nivardom.

Operation Purple Rain, seven days of bombardment of Nivardom after a grace period to surrender, ended the impasse. By that time, recent legislation adopted by the Synklētos, such as joining the Entente, opening diplomatic relations with Treisenberg and Ekklesia, and most particularly, establishing the Oranje Theme, gave the entire nation much positive news to look forward to.

With the evident disintegration of the Kómma ton Enopoíisi (Party of Unification), the election was but a formality, with its result, a foregone conclusion.

In a stinging rebuke to the status quo, Constancian voters have put the entire establishment on notice that patience among the electorate has worn thin. Increased democratic space has resulted in the entry of several new political movements, while evident protest votes in party leadership have resulted in the elimination of the Education Minister and Party Leader Uthman Habib Attar of the Kómma ton Apoikión, the Party of the Colonies, from political office, with Attar quietly retiring into academia. While the Kómma ton Syntiritikón Monarchikoí, the ruling Party of Conservative Monarchists, remains the largest party in the Synkletos, it is now forced to concede to a coalition government, with greater say from junior partners like the Fileléfthero Kómma Foní, the Liberal Voice Party, in order for Basil Tzimiskes to keep his post as Mesazon.
