Azeley Sophomore 1st in County Junior Gun Barrel
After 3 hours, 24 minutes, 47 seconds, sixteen year old Anita Talaine, Azeley [PAR], reached the finish line, unslung her rifle, and made her mark on the designated steel target.
With that characteristic clang, the sophomore from Azeley Ward won first prize in the First Annual Kezan Junior Gun Barrel, held in Ashes [TEL]. The competition, a combined shooting/athletic event, requires competitors to run 40 kilometers dressed in field uniform with a weighted rucksack and rifle loaded with a magazine of paint bullets. At the first-quarter, halfway, third-quarter, and final checkpoints, the competitors must stop to fire five rounds at a designated target before continuing -- with extra distance added as a penalty for missed shots.
Anita qualified for the county-level competition after coming 3rd in the Parini Junior Gun Barrel earlier this year. Anita said that she didn't expect to win, just that she wanted to say that she had been here.
"It's the first time they've done this for the whole county," Anita said, "me and twenty-four others from all across the county, here for this."
Second Place went to Nick Meton, 17, Rhadys [ARY]; Third Place went to Tim Skirides, 17, Mimsy [ADE]. Both were given extra distance for shots missed. Nick said that he intends to improve his accuracy and come back next year. "[It will be] my last chance before I age out of the Junior bracket," he said.
When asked if she will be here for the Second Annual Kezan Junior Gun Barrel, Anita shouted, "of course!"
The adult event is scheduled for next week.

Silbeck Power Station Now Net-Positive
Silbeck Power Station Now Net-Positive
Deep Energy announced today that its new facility, Silbeck Power Station, has begun to generate more energy than it takes in. Silbeck-I has been undergoing safety tests since it was brought online last month. Now its operators are allowing the chamber to build speed and electrical output. Deep Energy says that it intends to repeat its success for Silbeck-II and Silbeck-III. Silbeck Power Station is located on the eastern side of the Silbeck Hills, in Phaeder Ward [PAR].
Deep Energy has begun expansion of its facility in Tepher Ward [TEL], renaming it Panalkey Power Station. Its first chamber, Panalkey-I, was originally constructed and operated by Setec Kezan Ltd as a research station, but was converted solely to generative use by Setec Kezan shortly before ownership was transferred. Deep Energy intends to build three new chambers an Panalkey. Deep Energy is also exploring options in the Honour of Leilani for a third site.
Peter Adianę, Director of Deep Energy, is confident that his company will reach its goal of 5 gigawatts by the end of 1646 AN.

Last Coal Plant in Kezan Closed Down
Last Coal Plant in Kezan Closed Down
The stacks at Winbreck Power Station have gone quiet for good.
Ari Moschian, Managing Director of Setec Kezan's Power Division, oversaw the ceremonial stoppage of Unit B. Unit A had gone offline on 4.X.1646 AN, but Unit B had since remained online to provide supplemental power during high-demand periods. For thirty-nine years, Winbreck has supplied much of the power to the City of Idassa and southwestern Honour of Leilani. That era has now come to an end.
Director Moschian indicated that the site is slated to be converted into a chemical production facility, once Deep Energy's electrical output comfortably exceeds domestic consumption. Its railway connections, once vital to supplying the station with imported coal, will soon be running in the opposite direction, exporting high-grade methane and ammonia to the rest of the Imperial Republic and beyond. "Setec very much built this land and it will continue doing so for years to come," Director Moschian said during his remarks.
Deep Energy's rapid construction and conversion of existing facilities to their new electrical generation system is rapidly transforming life in the County Palatine. Hundreds of households have resettled in Phaeder [PAR] and Eumelis [LEI] Wards, to work at the new, large stations at Silbeck and Epirhine. Many are former employees of Director Moschian's, transferring their old skills towards the construction, operation, and maintenance of these newer, cleaner facilities. Peter Adianę, the Managing Director of Deep Energy, has stated that this has been an intentional process, to offset the economic displacement that his company is bringing. Many others are being retrained for new work in SK Chemicals, formerly Setec Kezan Chemical Division. Instead of producing the power, they will be turning it into a variety of chemicals. At Winbreck, much of the workforce intends to undergo retraining and remain.
One group, the Worker Cooperative of Gamhoft Power Station, a subcontractor to Setec Kezen Power, voted to refound itself as an industrial farming community, intending to use the imminent bounty of electricity and cheap chemical fertilizers to produce year-round fresh vegetables in controlled, indoor environments. The Gamhoft Worker Cooperative Planning Board predicts that a shift from traditional intensive farming to indoor, precision agriculture will take place as one of the many indirect effects of Deep Energy's new, potentially limitless power.
Baseload diesel power stations remain in operation in the Honours of Aryani and Adelaidini as well as the Liberty of Akis until additional Deep Energy facilities can be brought online and integrated into the power grid.

St. Nicholas Cathedral hosts Bright Week
St. Nicholas Cathedral hosts Bright Week
Bells broke the silence around midnight this weekend as the Christian community of the County Palatine celebrated the resurrection of their god. The largest celebration was held at St Nicholas Cathedral in the City of Idassa, in which a candle-lit procession was led through the city center, praising their god, Christ Iesous, in his victory over death. During this week, referred to as Bright Week, and for the next forty days, Christian worship communities, or churches, are opening their doors as wide as they will swing in order for non-Christian residents of Kezan to "come and see".
All residents of Kezan are encouraged to observe peacefully and to honor the celebration of this religious community.

Re: County Palatine News Brief
Kezan's successful bid at imperial statehood reminds me of the old adage, and one I've often had to use to reassure many clients: "It's not the size that's important, it's how well you use it."

Vaguely remember having made one of these back in the days. Not sure about what state it was.Mira Octavius-Aryani wrote:
