Why don't y'all establish a Charter like the MCS?

For that kind of thing to happen, people first have to agree about what would go in it. :doc:

We're probably at the stage we could. Originally we were deliberately making it informal, now I think we've come to the stage that we agree a little formality might actually be helpful.
The character Andreas the Wise is on indefinite leave. But he does deserve a cool war ribbon.

However, this account still manages:
Vincent Waldgrave - Lord General of Gralus
Manuel - CEO of VBNC. For all you'll ever need.
Q - Director of SAMIN
Duke Mel'Kat - Air Pirate, Melangian, and Duke of the Flying Duchy of Glanurchy
Cla'Udi - Count of Melangia
Vur'Alm Xei'Bôn - Speaker of Nelaga, Minister of Interior Affairs, and a Micron

A Charter is like a Constitution. If you make it and it doesn't work, then you make amendments to it so that it does work. Repeat that process as necessary. It's not rocket science, people!

Or just outright replace it, like the Founding Fathers thought they would do after 20 years.

The original vocal members of Bastion thought that it was inevitable that all member nations would merge politically and in all other ways, and that having ANY sort of official Bastion government, be it charter or position, was the first step on that brick road to oblivion.

The original vocal members of Bastion were very, very stupid. As usual. And we're paying for it now. Also as usual. But hopefully they're not as vocal now so it won't be hard to do things right.

I just remember Erik complaining about the threat to sovereignty by having anything, no matter how informal.

For as long as I've been involved with Bastion (which admittedly is not as long as most of you), the place has drifted upon a tide of inertia. A charter would at least clarify how things are supposed to work, thereby helping us to identify when they aren't.

As regards loss of sovereignty, the very fact that a member nation has to ask an admin (who may well not be a citizen of that state) to make major changes to its forum constitutes a de facto limitation upon its sovereignty. So at worse, a well-written charter won't make any practical difference and at best, it will actually reinforce the rights of each nation.

It is quite suitable with your avatar to quote that man.

I was away while this was going on, and spotted it clearing out the admin requests forum. A charter seems to me an okay idea, an idea that isn't necessary but could occasionally make things easier. So it's less like a constitution for a state or international organisation, more like the constitution of a student society, a comparison which is probably telling.
Bastion Union Administration Situation (-ion)

1. Bastion hosts micronations, micronational projects, intermicronational organisations and other whims of community members from time to time.
2. Ari Rahikkala is webmaster, administrator and Grim Auxiliator until such time as he relinquishes this role or stops paying the bills.
3. Other administrators shall be appointed by the Webmaster on the advice of the community to facilitate administrative requests.
4. Administrators may not abuse their powers for private gain except under the defences of (i) non-malicious intent or (ii) humorous intent, to be judged by the Grim Auxiliator on the advice of the community.
... but I realise the more we include, the less true to Bastion's liberal and successful model* we risk becoming; but the less we include, the more it feels like this is an utterly superfluous document.

* Some call this 'lack of direction' - in response I say insistence on direction is what kills most of our projects.
