The Maraguan Center for Historic Research (MCHR) is established to learn more about the long history of the Maraguan lands. Maraguo island has played a large part in the history of Micras, and it is our duty to be proud of that legacy and to protect it.

The first project is the research of the history of Thassala. An archeological site will be created on the place of old Thassala Bone, just outside the current city walls.

The Jasonic Period

In the Jasonian times, Thassala was one of the largest cities. The city appeared on the first map of the Apollo sector, made in 215 ASC. This map can be found here.

Due to the long time past, and the disappearance of the Jasonian forums, not much is known about the culture of Thassala back in the day. The MCHR would also welcome any information regarding those times.

Thassala was also depicted in the Control of Destiny game, which is also deleted and nowhere to be found. So, whoever has a copy (Jonas?), the MCHR would be most grateful.

When Jasonia became defunct, the Claimsmap depicted the Nelagan islands as green, but shortly after, they were claimed by a nation called Zindaria. Thassala was a ruin, and almost next to it, the city of Whale Bone was established. (Note that Whale Bone was not exactly on the same place as the Jasonian Thassala, as can be seen on this map

Suprisingly, the forums of Zindaria are still online.

We learn that the Zindarians have done several archeological expeditions. Their main goal was the research of Jasonian Antigravity. The expeditions can be found here.

History of Zindaria (from the Zindarian forums, written by Jacob Hill)
The nation is partly based on a cult called the Religion of the Eternal Phoenix which began in Greater Zjandaria in old Babka among illegal aliens there who were not of Babkhan origin.

On January 19, 2002, a revolt broke out among ethnic Zjandarians in Greater Zjandaria in the Kingdom of Babkha. This revolt lasted about a week, but resulted in a number of rebels going into hiding for years after the revolt ended.

Some ethnic Zjandarian outlaws still in hiding from this long forgotten Zjandarian revolt joined the Religion of the Eternal Phoenix in early 2006.

When the Islamist revolt broke out in Micrasian Babkha led by Umra Khan (the Umraist Revolt) and Micrasian Babkha collapsed in civil war, the Religion of the Eternal Phoenix, led by Luke Hill, declared the establishment of the Kingdom of Zindaria with Luke Hill as the king. The capital of the new kingdom was Zarathustra in what had been Greater Zjandaria.

The Kingdom of Zindaria failed to establish control over the territory it claimed or the allegiance of any but a handful of the people there and was never recognized as sovereign over that territory by any nation. Zindaria was also militarily defeated by Islamic radicals led by Umra Khan (the Umraists). As a consequence, the King of Zindaria led his people into exile in July of 2006.

Shortly afterwards, the Confederacy of Independent States (CIS) gained control of Old Zindaria from the Umraists as well as all the old mainland of Micrasian Babkha. Negotiations by Zindaria for the return of this land failed to secure the return of any of Old Zindaria by the CIS.

The Zindarian exiles numbered only a few hundred and were able to leave on a single ship, the Star of the Wind. The Star of the Wind took the exiles to an island (formerly ruled by Aerlig) near the coast of Alexandria where they set up camp and named the island "New Zindaria Island."

Meanwhile, the self-proclaimed king of Zindaria set up a government in exile in the Babkhan Quarter of Geneva in Alexandria. There he learned of the Hurmu Gate and began to scheme about a way to get his people through the gate to the world beyond to re-establish the Kingdom of Zindaria. During this time, a few dregs of society on the Aerlish island (New Zindaria Island) and in Geneva joined the Religion of the Eternal Phoenix and thus increased the number of Zindarians under the control of the government in exile to just over 1,000.

The Zindarian government in exile was ordered to leave Geneva by the Emperor of Micrasian Alexandria and was evacuated to New Zindaria Island.

With only 300 soldiers from Old Zindaria and 400 new recruits from Geneva, the Zindarian government gained control of New Zindaria Island and its 40,000 inhabitants. Zindarian soveriegnty over New Zindaria Island was recognized by the Micronational Cartography Society on September 6, 2006 and subsequently generally acknowledged by the nations of Micras.

Members of the Goloni Tribes in Eastern Grandica on Giess learned of the Religion of the Eternal Phoenix from Babkhans who had traveled from the Babkhan Quarter of Geneva to Giess via the Hurmu Gate. The Goloni Tribes were on the verge of a war amongst themselves over certain issues related to the loss of their traditions. The Eternal Phoenix's promise that all good things that are lost will be renewed immediately caught their attention and gave them hope that they could regain what was lost, avoid the looming civil war and also perhaps make a strategic alliance with the Zindarian King that would protect them from encroachment on their lands by Lovely, Paradisia and other nations as well as bring them modern technology.

Information about the situation in the Goloni lands was passed to the King of Zindaria by sympathetic Babkhans.

On October 28, 2006, the King of Zindaria proclaimed a protectorate over all the lands of the Goloni Tribes, thus establishing the Goloni Protectorate. Zindaria immediately began negotiations with Hurmu and its overlords, Stormark and Babkha, to send missionaries and government officials from Micras to the Goloni Protectorate on Giess via the Hurmu Gate.

The Riposte Expedition

On November 7, 2006, a small detachment of Zindarian soldiers led by Brevet Major Jean Claude Riposte, passed through the Hurmu Gate to Giess en route to the newly proclaimed Goloni Protectorate

After chartering a ship and undertaking a long voyage across the seas of Giess, the Riposte expedition arrived at the mouth of the Goloni River and disembarked.

Major Jean Claude Riposte was a French Alexandrian who had recently converted to the Religion of the Eternal Phoenix and had been chosen to command the Zindarian 2nd Infantry Regiment. He quickly made contact with some of the Goloni chiefs and secured their cooperation.

As Zindarian missionaries began their work, Major Riposte and his men began construction of a wooden fort at the mouth of the Goloni River. This fort, on the left bank of the river was soon named "Fort Riposte" in honor of the man who had constructed it. It later became the headquarters for the Zindarian 4th Infantry Regiment, known as the "King's Goloni Rifles" as well as the units that would later constitute the "Goloni Brigade". All these units were made up of Goloni warriors given guns and rudimentary training by Major Riposte and later shipped to New Zindaria Island on Micras for more advanced training.

The Annexation of Koranga

Koranga consists of the islands of Nelaga, Airosamente, Setauket and Armoria.

It was at one time the core of the old micronation of Jasonia. After the fall of Jasonia, it was under the custodianship of the Apollo Foundation. Aerlig then annexed the territory and it became part of the Grand Commonwealth when Aerlig joined the GC. After Aerlig abandoned the former Jasonian islands, one of them, Maraguo, was annexed by Matbaa. The rest remained ungoverned for a while. This was the time when the westernmost of the former Jasonian islands was taken over by Zindarians. It was named Solaria or West Isle and it was renamed New Zindaria Island.

The remaining islands of the Jasonian group, Nelaga, Airosamente, Setauket and Armoria were then colonized by New Brittania. The New Brittanians named these four islands the "Crown Colony of Koranga".

New Brittania gave up administration of Koranga in February, 2007. Zindaria initially became involved to protect archeological sites on Nelaga Island where its archeologists had been at work with the permission of New Brittania. After the collapse of order, Zindarian troops were sent in and King Luke of Zindaria formally annexed Koranga on February 26, 2007.

Adraisian Invasion and the Goloni War

On December 3, 2007 the Goloni Protectorate was invaded from the south by a nation calling itself the Empire of Adraisia. Adraisian forces called the Von Zeck Regiment and Campbell's Cavaliers moved in from the south, set up a logistical base called "Camp Victory" east of Golonka and proceeded north to occupy Itini-nada. They chose Itini-nada due to a strange map error in which the Geographic Standards Organization (GSO) had mislabelled Itini-nada as "Dolphin Bay", the capital of Zindaria. That, in turn, was caused by a misunderstanding on the part of the GSO about whether Dolphin Bay was located on Micras or Giess exacerbated by the fact that Chief Yashanda of the Itini had sarcastically begun referring to Itini-nada as "Dolphin Bay" as a means of mocking the Zindarian government.

Under the false impression that they were marching on the Zindarian capital, Adraisian forces occupied Itini-nada.

20,000 troops from the Empire of the Alexandrians intervened and deployed to a location near Itini-nada. The Democratic Republic of Riponia then intervened and also sent troops to Itini-nada.

The tense confrontation was partly defused when Prime Minister Jake Hill of Zindaria informed the foreign powers of the map error and requested that Riponian troops redeploy to Ft. Riposte, the actual administrative capital of the Goloni Protectorate. Riponian troops then moved to Ft. Riposte and set up a base on the coast nearby.

Zindaria then sent the Goloni Brigade (1st Brigade) upriver towards Itini-nada under the command of Lt. Colonel Jean-Claude Riposte.

The Kingdom of Zindaria deployed additional troops to the Goloni Protectorate including, for the first time, two regiments from the home islands. These were the 3rd Regiment and the 5th Regiment. Previously all Zindarian Army troops in the Goloni protectorate were native Goloni people recruited into the Zindarian Army. These were the Goloni Brigade.

Adraisian forces began withdrawing on the the 18th of February, 2008 and completed that withdrawal shortly thereafter.

Zindarian forced proceeded up the Teviso River towards Itini-nada to verify the Adraisian withdrawal when they were ambushed by rebels. The Goloni Brigade halted its advance.

Rebel forces also attacked the remaining troops at Ft. Riposte with horse cavalry and mortars forcing Zindarian Army troops to take refuge at the Riponian Army Camp. The Riponians sheltered the Zindarian troops, but refused to intervene.

The Ocian Federation offered to intervene and provided substantial military equipment, air support and a regiment of their elite Jaeger troops.

Upon hearing of the fall of Ft. Riposte, the Goloni Brigade reversed direction and headed back downriver to Ft. Riposte.

Zindarian reinforcements arrived by ship and set up Camp Resilience near Ongo and convinced Chief Izinga of the Taga people to mobilize his warriors to assist. This is the origin of the Taga Regiment and the Tribel Militia Force. Chief Angal of the Tukaroa also prepared to join the fight with thousands of Tukaroa warriors. Chief Keriat of the Loktok also joined the cause. The Goloni Brigade and Ocian forces surrounded the rebel troops at Ft. Riposte, but did not fire a shot until another rebel force attacked them from the north, trying to break the seige. The siege was broken and rebel troops in the fort managed to escape. Ocian aircraft and a regiment of Jaeger troops participated in the fighting.

Rebel forces then attacked the town of Tukaroa and Camp Resilience near Ongo. These were hard fought battles, but ultimately were victories for Zindaria.

At that point, peace negotiations began.

Thassala was the fourth settlment of the FIoJ, after Jasonia Palace, Kajar, and Enhasa, but behind Airosamente, Aquata, and Lekuan.

During the Golden Age of the FIoJ, the period between the fall of Audentior and the cold war with Shireroth, the Jasonian government started a program to attempt to reinvigorate interest in cities as semi-autonomous political units (similar to provinces and states of larger countries) by offering various political and economic bonuses to anyone willing to found a new city. Bill Dusch and Ryan Caruso (WarVoid at the time) were the two that took up the offer and created Thassala. I believe Ryan named it, though Bill dominated the culture of the city even early on. As Bill was High Judge at the time, he had the high courts located in Thassala. He also wrote laws encouraging immigrants from the previous independent but newly annexed territory of Tapfer (an old micronation, the successor of the United Demesos, which used Bill's Demesos government from a high school project) to relocate to Thassala. Compared to the highly structured (arguably over-structuured and over-zoned) Kajar, Thassala grew rapidly and without much pattern, developing distinct Jasonian and Tapferite quarters, but still held together pretty well as a functional city. It gained a reputation as sort of a place of "new blood" compared to the possibly stagnant Jasonia Palace, conflicted Kajar, and detached Enhasa.

dStryker, the microworld's leading economist and industrialist at the time, decided to take advantage of the cheaper land and generally untapped markets in Thassala to begin construction of the Thassala Tower. This insane, massive superproject was designed to be taller than both Mount Urojea and the Jasonia Palace that sat upon it, making it the highest structure in Jasonia (and, by extension, the planet, taking advantage of Jasonia's cloud-level altitude via antigravity.) Various sources conflict on how all this went down, but what seems most coherent to me is that the economic decline of Jasonia lead to the project being scaled way, way back; it was still a massive, 100+ tower in its own right, but wasn't dwarfing any mountains. Oddly, in all of the archaeological digs, no serious evidence of the tower was found. This is speculated to be because the Thassala Tower had a horribly unstable foundation; the ground around Thassala simply wasn't hard enough bedrock to support a massive skyscraper, so it held up its massive weight with internal antigravity generators; smaller versions of what held up Jasonia itself. When the national power failed during the Fall that destroyed Jasonia, the Tower was absolutely annihilated between the catastrophic crash as well as its own inability to hold itself up.

Thassala was featured in most of the CoD games. CoD1 and 2 were designed before Thassala was founded, but it was retconned in for minor roles. Both Jasonia: The Dark One and Jasonia: The Light of Hope have major sections that involve activities in Thassala. JDO covers the cultural aspect of the quarters, and JLH heavily explores the Thassala Tower.

Thank you, Harvey, for this most interesting information. With the unfortunate deletion of Jasonia's message boards, we do rely on eyewitness accounts such as yours to get a clear view of the past.
