Re: Christmas Presents in Northern Europe
Northern Europe is the northern part or region of Europe. Although no definitive borders or definition exists for the term, geographically, Northern Europe consists of (from west to east): Iceland, Ireland, the Isle of Man, the United Kingdom, the Faroe Islands, the Netherlands, northern Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and northwest Russia. Greenland, geographically a part of North America, is politically a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and may be included depending on the definition.[1]

I like how they say there is no definition and then define it.

Re: Christmas Presents in Northern Europe
This thread is turning into a debate over what countries
belong to "northern Europe". I would just say the poll
can include any country in Europe. Nevermind about
the country being northern.

I'd say you've already got a fairly conclusive answer:
Unless you are a child, Christmas is about eating, getting drunk and pretending to like your family.Yes: 1
No: 5
Re: Christmas Presents in Northern Europe
I've never bought a christmas gift in my life, nor can I remember ever receiving one.

And they have to pretend to like them?Orion wrote:I don't like the consumerist aspect of gift-giving. This survey presents gift-giving as if buying gifts is the only option. Quite often I make the gifts I give people.

Re: Christmas Presents in Northern Europe
So it seems that Northern Europe no longer maintains a tradition of giving
Christmas gifts, in general.
No television advertisements of Lexuses and Mercedes wrapped in bows or
diamond rings under a tree, like in America.
Or fistfights and brawls in Wal-Marts, etc., either.
I was just curious to see to what extent the gift giving aspect of Christmas
remained in Northern Europe. Thanks for your responses.

Seems like my vote was the only yes, and that was more aligned to the "very common" part of the question rather than to "important"...

Seriously, when i look at your formatting I have to ask, do you write your posts in Wordpad first and then copy them over to the forum or what?Thadeus Lange Jr wrote:So it seems that Northern Europe no longer maintains a tradition of giving

Alexandria due to their more formal style over there, and I just have stuck
with it for consistency.

Consistency does not trump the fact that it looks silly and is annoying to read.

This isn't Shireroth, where Dr Belledin has no control, so he cannot
force me to change my typing style. That said, he has every
right to express his opinion! And Mr Nur Pinito too!

I resent the implication that I have in this thread tried to force anything.

Re: Christmas Presents in Northern Europe
I do too, and think of North/South Europe as being equivalent to the global north/south within Europe. East/West is old hat. In the UK political language anyway, I think it's common to group Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece as unfortunate southern European economies. The UK and France certainly aren't Mitteleuropa.Malliki Nur Pinito wrote:I think you are the only one that places the UK and France in northern Europe.

It's just never been a tradition here. Probably the American "tradition" was invented by Coca Cola or Wal-Mart. Like allof your traditions.Thadeus Lange Jr wrote:So it seems that Northern Europe no longer maintains a tradition of giving

I think France is the very definition of Middle Europe. Their agrarian subsidies certainly disqualify it from being amonh the Northern economies...Vilhelm Benkern wrote:I do too, and think of North/South Europe as being equivalent to the global north/south within Europe.
