The Siege of Daguesland

Post by Nathan »

Sovereign Rowena, the new Lord of Dagues Jean-Jacques, Lord Dante of Rubis, and Lord Brutus of Matraques were convened in the Congress Chamber to deal with the hasty disappearance of Jacques-Louis.

Dante and Brutus, who found themselves in a new alliance since Rowena secured the sovereignty, were insisting on enforcing the quarantine with the Matraques' armies.

"But my lords, my House would never allow the quartering of Matraques along our border with Daguesland. It is absolutely out of the question. It violates everything this arrangement is founded on! How can we be equal when they are roaming around the pristine lands of Amours?" Rowena said, almost desperately.

Jean-Jacques, whose predecessor was Rowena's unlikely ally, was of little help. He was merely a boy, compared to the other lords, and he was determined to not allow the House of Dagues be destroyed by wondercidal nuns. "My lords, as lord of House Dagues, I must vote in favor of the armed reinforcements. It is Rowena's right to refuse however. Perhaps the Matraques army can be diverted through Rubisland?"

Dante spoke now, "Foolishness. By the time the Matraques reach our own border with Daguesland, the nuns will have escaped in Amoursland. No, the Matraques army must be split equally through each House to ensure no escape." Now Dante spoke directly to Rowena, a slight breach of etiquette in the Congress, his tone carried the bittersweet fondness of old friends speaking who were now too far gone to apologize, "House Rubis is not in favor of having Matraques march through us either, but the Plague must be limited to Daguesland and the nuns must eliminated."

Rowena saw that she was outvoted now. She had the right to force a deadlock, but could she be responsible for allowing the Plague to run rampant through not only Merveilles, but Amoursland? After all, her Houseland was the easiest point of entry with the River protecting Rubisland. No, she had to take a lessen from young Jean-Jacques, who is allowing an invasion of his Houselands to preserve them for the future.

She spoke, her voice more forceful than she anticipated, "Amours votes in favor of the armed enforcement. As Sovereign of this Tetrarchy, I hereby create a Marshal to serve as commander-in-chief of the combined armies of the four Houselands and install Lord Brutus of Matraques in that position. Lord Marshal Brutus, you are charged with defending the borders of Daguesland to prevent the spread of this Plague and to eradicate any person believed to be spreading it maliciously."

She fell to her seat, and wept.

--------------------

The Army of the Houselands, mainly just the Matraques army, had positioned itself on the borders of Daguesland within the week. The many Wonderments were located along the borders to enforce the quarantine. After a few days, however, the army got restless, to no one's surprise. The Lord Marshal soon ordered the lines to move north and west, tightening the quarantine and shrinking Daguesland.

The Siege went on for four weeks, with the army ravaging the countryside of south Daguesland and north Amoursland for food. Every few days a nun was captured, keeping the Siege active and relevant.

After four months, the Army of the Houselands had effectively become an occupation. Jean-Jacques' voice in the Congress became quieter and quieter, either from shame of losing control of his House or fear of having it destroyed further by an angry Lord Marshal. He had no grounds to order an end to the quarantine as nuns were being captured every several days now.

Rowena also found it difficult to maintain her House's honor in the Congress, which was meeting ever more infrequently as Brutus was almost entirely occupied with the occupation. He ignored Rowena's demands that he relinquish his title of Marshal, claiming the position was created to enforce the quarantine and the quarantine was still necessary.

The Tetrachy was over. Perhaps it was destined to fail. Lord Marshal Brutus was firmly in control of a deserted and depressed Daguesland. The Congress was a shadow of its former glory, no longer a bastion of consensus. The authority of the Sovereign was a joke. Rowena spent most of her time in Liebling, rallying her people against the Matraques that deserted the army and were pillaging her countryside.

"Wondercidal nuns" is a great phrase. Would make a good name for a rock band.
