Provisional Government Established

LIGHTHOUSE -- The ancient structure of the Lighthouse once again became a seat of government as Queen Alexis announced the formational of a provisional parliament and appointed a new cabinet. Dating back to around 5000 years ago (ASC) the Lighthouse was constructed as an intermediary zone to foster peace between two of Micras' early major powers; Treesia and the Free Republic. Over the years the Lighthouse changed hands several times, often serving the same purpose as a neutral location for major powers to negotiate. Eventually the Lighthouse even became its own city-state. Although the original square stone tower has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, each reconstruction faithfully preserved the same footprint, keeping the structure the same. And today the tower once again served as a meeting place for officials as Queen Alexis perused the building to officiate her new government.

The new parliament was as bare-bones as any could possibly be. With the loss of the home isles the new ministers represent very small population centers; Lighthouse, Pharos, Port Goose, and Montauk. Lacking the means by which to hold a vote, the Queen chose to appoint ministers for duration of the provisional government. Parliament itself will act more as an advisory council, providing oversight to the four territories, with especial concern for refugee welfare. Of greater importance was that the Queen appointed a cabinet, officially naming Admiral Wellesley head of the Royal Navy and appointing several others to replace those lost in the volcanic cataclysm. With cabinet heads now in place the provisional government can begin to arduous task of bringing order to the chaos that is the Brettish refugee situation. Estimates put the expatriate population of Brettish - both at sea and living abroad - between 700,000 and 1 million. Getting these people to the Skerries and getting them fed, settled, and organized, is set to be a task of immense undertaking.

Queen Alexis also officially assumed the mantle of Queen today, accepting a new crown, given that the royal heirlooms were lost with the burning of Westminster. For many this is a surprising turn of events, given Alexis was the most outspoken liberal of the royal family, often touting the disbandment of the monarchy. However the gravity of the situation has seen her turn a more commanding eye on the remains of the Empire. To bring the remains of the Brettish people back together and save them from fading into oblivion forever a strong hand is clearly necessary. Hence martial law remains in place, despite the formation of a provisional government, and will remain so as the new state continues to cope with the aftermath of the Caldera explosion. But like the ashes of destruction, these trying times of hardship will also fade given time.
