Can I ask a silly question? Are the blue lines representing 'rivers', boundaries or roads?

They are supposed to be canals. Blackstone is a kind of Venice, but then a little larger.

Aww, it's like a tiny group of islands. Pretty neat.

Well, they are canals, so technically it's still one island, but indeed one needs to cross some bridges from time to time :)
And thank you.

I would suggest a small centrally-located spring-fed lake somewhere, unless you want your canals to be salt-water and poison the ground. =p Perhaps make it part of the Temple grounds, thereby keeping it sanctified land.

I'd say go with the spring idea but have it distribute water from multiple points so as to ensure that all areas are properly cared for.

Or... rule that every house must have a cistern for rain water. And as for poisoning the land, who needs crops when you have herring?

The canals are all salt water. But that is alright since the only nature on the island is found in a small cultivated forest near Blackstone castle, and in Layla's Gardens. Both are irrigated by natural wells of sweet water (or at least they are now, since I didn't really take this problem into account =p ).
