Operation Dragon Continues

Post by Strategos Metaxas »

I.

On the morning of the 19th of May, a hot and humid day of brilliant sunshine, two Banda of the 1st Corps of the Home Guard, supported by six of Paixhans improvised armoured vehicles, together with the Cessnas and PC-9Ms of Alpha and Beta Squadrons, combined to dislodge the Jingdaoese from their dominating position overlooking the road southwards into Portus Felix.

The PC-9M light attack aircraft, converted to carry a light bomb load, strafed Jingdaoese positions in support of the advancing Guardsmen and armoured vehicles.

The Jingdaoese positions, ringing the top of a hill overlooking the road south, were not held in strength when the Home Guard attacked. Nevertheless, their fearless resistance cost the Home Guard 100 casualties.

The Jingdaoese were astonished when six of Paixhans' ESB designed tanks climbed up the approaches to their position. The tanks moved up to the summit at such a sharp angle that their drivers could not see the ground ahead. The vehicle commanders, spurning personal safety, stood up in the open vehicle hatches to direct the drivers, simultaneously harassing the Jingdaoese with hand grenades and hand guns, Five of the six commanders were killed.

At the summit. the Home Guard met fierce resistance from the Jingdaoese who had survived the aerial and artillery bombardments, but finally the Guardsmen cleared the ridge with a bayonet charge which left the road to Portus Felix open.

II.

The 2nd Corps of the Home Guard had cleared the village of Panaghia Ereithiani by the 19th of May and commenced a dual advance from the north and east to the south, pressing into the heart of the Jingdaoese NPA's 1st Army. Although the 1st Corps of the Home Guard was pressing southwards towards Portus Felix, hopes of encirclement were frustrated by the lack mobility affecting the Home Guard.

On the 20th of May, when the 1st and 2nd Corps of the Home Guard met, the Jingdaoese had fallen back towards Portus Felix.

To prevent their escape, the Home Guard was ordered by Autokrator Metaxas to advance on Portus Felix.

III.

Event though the Home Guard continued to press their offensive towards Portus Felix, the remnants of the regular Constancian Army was in no position to join the offensive, being heavily depleted after breaking out of the town; their moral and cohesion shattered by bitter fighting. The best that could be expected from the division strength ad hoc formation was that they held the line long enough for reinforcements from the Home Guard's Army of Eura reached their positions.

Jingdaoese troops of the First Legion retreated rapidly to Portus Felix, the Constancian Home Guard was following them just out of sight. On their way the legion passed the village of Krini, which was located in a narrow pass between rock formations, where a few large trucks with supplies could not make it through the small and twisty streets, these trucks were left behind. The Jingdaoese troops were in a hurry to leave the village with all haste.

The Constancian Home Guard became suspicious when they found their path through the village blocked by the Jingdaoese troops and only a few soldiers were sent in advance, to scout the position. They found that the trucks were only carrying food and ammunition and were not rigged, they found no evidence of other Jingdaoese activity in the village. With supplies dwindling, the Home Guard decided to pass through the village, taking the trucks with them.

As soon as the main part of the Home Guard passed the church of Krini, a Jingdaoese agent who was hiding in the crypt activated the detonator which was linked to the thermobaric device he was sitting on. The entire village and most of the Home Guard was set alight and the blast wave destroyed what didn't burn. Jingdoese troops on the hills surrounding the village opened machine gun fire to suppress any Constancian soldier that sought to escape.

Before the smoke was lifted over the village, panzers from the First Legion passed through Krini. Their crews horrified by the way the Constancian soldiers and citizens were maimed by the explosion and fireball. But they knew the war had to go on, no peace could be signed until the Constancians had paid the full price for their insults toward the Heavenly Light.
