Preparations

Post by Strategos Metaxas »

All over the country, roadblocks, slit-trenches, foxholes, pillboxes, sandbagged emplacements and barbed wire blossomed like the spring flowers that would suddenly appear from nowhere to carpet the desert. A series of defensive lines began to encrust the major cities of the Kingdom.

In addition to the defensive sites, every field or level surface was loughed up or sown with stakes or wire obstacles. Road blocks were improvised, first from farm carts and tractors and later by means of brick and concrete 'dragons-teeth' sunk into the asphalt.

Following on from the order to arm the trade unions and the youth movements of the political parties, the newly formed Observer Corps and the Police began to receive the various new small arms that were trickling into the country from various sources.

The vast Home Guard and the other auxiliary militias were becoming a law unto themselves. Every sort of weapon from the assagai to the crossbow and the trebuchet was pressed into use. Banda across the land made Molotov cocktails from wine bottles filled with a mixture of petrol, sulphur and tar and equipped with sandpaper and matches, while others amused themselves with lengths of gas piping packed with weed killer and fertiliser and fitted with a fuse.

Road signs and town signs disappeared or were painted over. Driving was a nightmare as those with cars were treated with great suspicion if they asked where they were.

One extraordinary result of the invasion was the appearance on the road instead of large numbers of home made armoured vehicles converted from cars and vans. Built in garages and workshops, they showed great ingenuity but operationally, not much was to be hoped from them. Still they served as a morale boost for the thousands of Home Guardsmen on the march south.
